Traditionally, training in psychiatry was confined to 4.5 years in the Netherlands, with no formal training in geriatric psychiatry (although it was recommended to fulfil a 6-month residency in old age). Since January 2011 the training programme has changed dramatically. After a general training for 2.5 years in psychiatry, residents have to choose between the subspecialties of Child and Adolescence, Adult, or Geriatric Psychiatry (each for a period of 2 years). For training in geriatric psychiatry, we have developed a national training programme organised in five themes/courses, i.e. gerontology, psychiatric disorders in late-life, neurocognitive disorders, psychotherapy and finally one on ethics, law and management. Locally, training programmes have been developed and certified to train competencies of residents in geriatric psychiatry. These local training programmes have to meet the criteria setup nationally and need to be certified by both Dutch Association of Psychiatry (NVVP) as well as the Dutch Registration system for Medical Specialisms (RGS). Certifications need to be renewed every five years. During the symposium, the training programme will be explained in more detail, including the pitfalls and success we have faced during preparation and implementation.
